Worms

What happened?
Discussion with scholarship student (Shana) on her summer project on - what can be done to stop mushroom compost going to landfill, can worms break down the salinity?
-she is an undergrad and applied to do the summer scholarship

What I learnt?
-she sought help from other departments to helps with stats use and interpretations - data not necessarily valid
-seasons can effect the work - she couldn't find enough worms (she needed 200ish, but because it's so dry, she dug holes all over the place and had trouble finding enough worms for the project
-feedback is good - she was waiting for feedback and hoping the work she did was useful and meaningful - she was hoping Meadow Mushrooms might pay for more investigations
-scientists collaborate - it's never a single pursuit even though they hang out in their offices and it's all pretty quiet - they constantly discuss what they are working on and the implications

Implications for classroom?
-collaboration is essential
-feedback that is meaningful is motivating and important for improvements
-won't always go according to plans - despite being prepared
-be organised - prethink everything that will be needed and alternatives if goes wrong
