Life at University
It's been a while since I've been at uni (1997), and Canterbury is very different to Lincoln. Lincoln is very calm, quiet and peaceful. Waiting outside for a lecture, I'm practically alone, where are all the people I wonder? The ability to sit under a tree and have some silence before a lecture is a treat.
I've been lucky to be able to sit in on lectures and it is interesting to observe the students from an outsiders point of view. Thoughts:
Lecturers allow thinking breaks
Personable, presentations, readings and supplementary info avail online
About half have laptops open on slides and take notes digitally
Fairly studious, little talking, when asked to think pair talk, they do
Use of video, interactive, questioning
learning intentions shared - by the end of the lesson
Learning lots but the 100 level seems quite basic, on earth science - beginnings of life - really enjoying it and many notes that can be used at school, quite accessible information but useful for school programmes.
Implications for students - learners needs to able to read, self manage, listen, sit still, communicate, access timetables
Teaching - got to be interactive, visual, meaningful, building on each concept
Science - lecturer explained this is what we know based on evidence, critiqued the evidence, gathered from multiple sources, knew the content, basic but necessary for moving forward in life sciences
